Felix Baumgartner wants to push the boundaries of aerospace exploration. His goal : to become the first person to exceed the sound barrier in freefall.

The athlete will go from 120 000 feet, an altitude record. In 1960, Colonel Joseph Kittinger had made a jump to 102 800 feet. He established a world record so far unmatched. The scientific data will be collected during the fall to over 1 100km/h and they will set new standards in aerospace and medicine security.

Felix Baumgartner will be protected by a pressurized spacesuit. To achieve this feat, he will rise thanks to a cap worn by a helium balloon. The success of the mission Red Bull Stratos should provide four world records : the highest jump ever done on the edge of the stratosphere, the passage of the sound barrier with his own body, the longest free fall for return to earth and the highest altitude ever reached by manned balloon.

L’athlète va partir de 36 500 mètres, une altitude record. En 1960, le Colonnel Joseph Kittinger avait effectué un saut à 31 300 mètres. Il a installé un record mondial pour l’instant inégalé. Les données scientifiques seront collectées pendant la chute à plus de 1 100km/h et elles permettront d’établir de nouveaux standards dans la sécurité aérospatiale et médicale.

Félix Baumgartner sera protégé par une combinaison spatiale pressurisée. Pour réaliser cet exploit, il s’élèvera grâce à une capsule portée par un ballon d’hélium. La réussite de la mission Red Bull Stratos devrait permettre d’établir quatre records du monde : le saut le plus haut jamais réalisé à la limite de la stratosphère, le passage du mur du son avec son propre corps humain, la plus longue chute libre pour revenir sur terre et l’altitude la plus élevée jamais atteinte en ballon habité.
